Browsing Around

This week we are reading the first few chapters of Creating Web Sites: The Missing Manual, by Matthew MacDonald. I have the 2006 edition but there may be a more recent edition.

The first chapter is very basic and meant for those who need to start at square one.
The book starts of by explaining "the Web," with the initial planning beginning in the 1960s. MacDonald (2006) also explains meaning of the Web. How the Web is used to exchange information over the Internet.
It seems like the terms Web and Internet have become rather synonymous. Other related terms that I've also heard include "the net" or "online."

MacDonald also covers the meaning of a browser and names the most popular ones:
-Internet explorer: (most popularly known) created by Microsoft
-Firefox: (freely offered, a change of pace from explorer) created by Mozilla
-Netscape Navigator: one of the first browsers created
-Opera: cuts out a lot of the nonsense stuff (ads) thrown in by explorer, but may cost $
-Safari (for mac users)
-Lynx : (text-based browser)

My personal favorite is Firefox. Although I'm a mac user there are several applications that safari does not register. Firefox is usually a safe bet and runs great, regardless of the occasional ad.
